Friday and Saturday Nights

Lindsey and Josh had their engagement pictures taken yesterday... I was so excited she asked my sister, Michelle, to take them! This is the only one I've seen so far, can't wait to see the rest! They are just too cute of a couple.

Gavin and I took ingredients over to Dani and Nico's and made them dinner last night at her house. She was feeling a bit under the weather so it was nice to go over and make a meal for her. I love spending time over there and the boys enjoy each other's company. Another friend, Heather, came over too. She's 32 weeks pregnant and we were able to fill her in on labor and delivery stories!

Happy Birthday, Melissa! Tonight we ordered Olive Garden take-out (too hard to eat at a restaurant on a Saturday night with so many little kiddos!) and had birthday cake over at Melissa's. The food was delicious!

Practice with the Babycook!

I had a sweet potato that was going bad, so I decided to use it to practice with the babycook! It was too easy. I peeled and diced the potato, added water to the machine, and then put the diced potato in the steaming basket.
Next, I put the lid on and turned the knob to steam. A light turned green when it was finished.

Next you put the veggies right into the canister with either water, breastmilk, or formula... put the lid back on, and puree it in just seconds! I used water today, but will use breastmilk when I'm making it for the real thing.


It looked so colorful and fresh. I tasted it and it was awesome! I'm so excited about the Beaba Babycook. I think Gavin is really going to enjoy his food.

Cleanup is a breeze... you just put the steaming basket, spatula, and canister on the top shelf of the dishwasher!

Fly on the wall

I'll admit it, I have a bit of a nosey tendency! I often find myself thinking "I wish I could be a fly on the wall when that takes place!" I so enjoy the fact that I can sneak in Gavin's room and be that "fly" when he's drifting into sleep. I love to watch him sleep. Today, he was more in a mood of just relaxing and taking in the scenery. I love to capture these sweet moments on film. Gavin usually sleeps on his tummy, but here lately is constantly rolling over. He has found a whole new world in his crib while laying on his back and side! He gazes at his fish mobile as well as the black and white images I hung along the side of his crib... I know they are Christmas images, but he loves looking at them so I can't bring myself to take them down! So... below are two videos of me enjoying being a fly on the wall during rest time. I know in another month or so I won't be able to sneak in anymore without being noticed, so I better enjoy it while it lasts!

This morning we enjoyed a quiet breakfast with Janet at her hotel. She was so sweet to take time out of her busy day to share a meal with us. We love to see familiar faces in Savannah and hope she will be able to visit on business again soon!

Dinner with Aunt Janet

Tonight we were so fortunate to have dinner with my aunt Janet, who is in town for business, all the way from Los Angeles, CA! She is here with HBO scouting for a location to film a mini series. We met downtown tonight with her and her colleagues at the 700 Drayton Restaurant inside the Mansion on Forsyth Park. Talk about an awesome restaurant! I think Jason and I will be heading back there for a date night one of these days. The food was delicious! Gavin was pooped, as we weren't able to meet up until after 8pm, so we couldn't stay long. It was great to see Janet and we hope to meet up with her again tomorrow before she heads to Charleston, SC.

Gavin fell asleep in the car before I could even get his stroller loaded up in the trunk - he was a tired boy!

Growing Up

Tonight I looked down at Gavin as I was getting him ready for bed and realized we don't have a newborn anymore... he's growing up too fast. Where have the last 4 months gone??? I just love his cheeks when he looks up and smiles at me. Nothing else in this world compares to being a mommy.

Last few days...

Gavin and I have stayed pretty busy the last few days, so we haven't had much time for blogging. On the 22nd he had his 4 month appointment. He weighed in at 16 pounds, 10 ounces (75th %ile)! He also grew 3 inches in the last two months, so he's now at 25 3/4 inches (50th %ile). Thats our big boy! It's so amazing to me that he has grown like this and it's 100% breastmilk that has nourished his body and mind. I'm so blessed that my body has been able to provide what he needs, and also that he has taken to it so well. Gavin's exam was really good. He did have a little buildup in his left ear but she quickly cleaned it out (against his wishes). We decided to vaccinate Gavin on an alternative schedule after reading Dr. Sears book on Vaccines. We still firmly believe in getting vaccines, we just chose to spread them out and only get 2 at a time. It will mean more trips to the office, but it also means less chemicals going into his body at once. He did fuss for the shots and was very sleepy afterwards, but he did alright other than that. We will go back in a few weeks for Gavin to get the next 2 vaccines. Our pediatrician was excited about me choosing to make my own baby food. She recommended for Gavin that it will be appropriate for him to start slowly between 5 and 6 months of age. Jason is getting so excited to take part in his first feeding with solids.

Gavin made a new discovery the other day - the mirror on his exersaucer! He loves to check himself out. He uses the elephant and seal to pull himself over towards the mirror - too smart!

I did my monthly weigh in at Weight Watchers earlier this week. I lost 4 pounds since my December weigh in. I was pretty surprised since I was so bad over the holidays. So, I've lost 44 pounds since my 38 week pregnant appt. with Gavin. I have 2 pounds to go until I'm where I wanted to be when Jason gets home and about 7 pounds to go until I'm at a very happy weight!

Yesterday I made a big, and I mean BIG, boo boo... I was trying to be productive during nap time and work outside... I trimmed the bushes, and was moving on to the garage to organize. Being careless, I knocked over Jason's motorcycle, into my car, and then fell on top of it all. With the instant adrenaline rush, you'd have thought I could move mountains, but I still wasn't able to pick the darn bike up myself. I had to run from neighbor to neighbor until I found someone home and willing to help. I walked away with a scratch on my arm and bump on the leg, my car survived with a 4 inch scratch/dent and some red paint we'll have to buff out, the bike wasn't so lucky. The majority of the damage is pictured above. The right mirror broke off and the plastic plate cracked in half. Of course I also knocked the bike out of the gear it was in, so I can't even get it to start. I'm hoping that nothing internal is messed up. So... yesterday afternoon was not a good time. Writing an e-mail to a deployed husband explaining that you just crashed his PARKED motorcycle is not a fun task. I'm so thankful, though, that I have the most forgiving, understanding, loving hubby. He wrote back and then called to assure me not to worry about it, that it was okay, and he'd take care of fixing it later. I'm also thankful that Gavin was inside, safe in his crib. Had he been in my arms, or outside in the garage with me, things could have been VERY bad. I just kept thinking "what if the bike had fallen over onto Gavin"... So, even in the bad, I'm thankful I have such a great husband and that Gavin was not injured. Lesson learned to be more careful next time! My level of guilt is ALMOST at high as the time I forgot our birth certificates mid-drive to our honeymoon cruise... which resulted in a 26 hour drive!!! Tennessee to southern Georgia, back to Tennessee, then down to southern Florida... What a drive - what guilt! But, what a testimony to my husbands patience, forgiveness, and love!

After the incident I had some quality time with some friends and their kiddos. We went to mexican for dinner... Not at all a healthy choice, but I think after yesterday it was well deserved! Spending time with good friends around a dinner table of awesome food always puts me in a better mood.

e-mealz is, in fact, easy!

Today I printed out this weeks menu/grocery list from e-mealz.com. I did a few modifications, and highlighted what I would eat... then headed out shopping. The list was so easy to follow! It tells you the brand name and even price of each item you have to get. I think we're going to save money using this, as they plan meals using mostly the Great Value brand at Walmart. Our grocery bill wasn't bad at all! Tonight I made the Baked Ziti, Italian Bread, and Salad. My meal was only 8 Weight Watcher points. It tasted great and filled me up! Though I picked the plan for 2 people, it still made 4 servings, so I have plenty for leftovers later this week. The Ziti will make a great lunch tomorrow!

Congrats, President Obama

Yes, I know I'm crazy... but here is a pic of my little man at the exact moment that the first African American man became president of the United States. I am not a democrat, nor did I vote for Obama, but I still wanted to preserve a photo of this moment in history for Gavin. My eyes were glued to the tv screen all day and I even shed a few tears for both good and bad reasons. I can't wait to see what Obama has in store for this nation in the next four years... I'm excited that he has drawn the interest of so many young Americans. I also love that he is so technologically savy (if thats even a proper term??). He has the potential to do some great things. Congrats President Obama, make us proud!

Sippy Cup

Tonight was a big night for Gav - he tested out a sippy cup! I have a few frozen bags of breastmilk that are going to be bad soon, so we are using them over the next few nights to practice more and more with the cup. He figured out what the handles were very quickly and put the cup straight to his mouth. Once he figured out something came out of the nipple he was loving it. He got about one ounce out, but I think most ended up on his sleeper! He figured out how to suck and get it out, but then he'd just let it drool out of his mouth. I'm impressed for his first night of trying. We have a few events coming up in the next couple months where we will have to be away from Gavin for a couple hours, so I'm determined to teach him how to use either a sippy cup or bottle before then so I can pump him milk and know he will be comfortable drinking it from someone else! I don't want my boy going hungry without me here.

I found a few great buys today as well! The cart/high chair cover is from TJ Maxx - they were much cheaper there then the ones I've seen at Walmart or Target. He'll get much use out of this! Also picked up "Baby Wise II" and "Top 100 Baby Purees". My mom was too sweet and ordered the Beaba BabyCook for me today as an early birthday present. (I did some intense research and found that the BabyCooks they sell in the US are now, in fact, BPA-Safety tested.) Jason's aunt sent me a great website (http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/) and I plan to use this as a guideline for what foods should be started in what months. I'm going to print the chart they give and take it to Gavin's pediatrician Thursday to make sure she agrees its an appropriate plan for him. If so, it looks like we are well on the way to starting Gavin out in the right direction with solid foods! He's taken to breastfeeding and sleeping like a champ, I hope he does the same with solids. Thank you to everyone who gave advice and has helped answer my million questions about at home baby food making!

Another prayer of mine has been answered today. In March, Jason and I have a big weekend planned with the battalion (a memorial service for SSG Davis, Ranger Ball, a parenting conference, etc). We really wanted to take full advantage of all the events going on, but were starting to stress having a babysitter for that long with Gavin, especially when all of our friends that we would trust will also be at these events. But, Gammy stepped in and saved the day! Starla is going to fly in that weekend and take away our babysitter worries. Gavin is going to get a weekend of quality one on one time with Gammy! Jason and I are going to be able to spend one night away together in downtown Savannah after the Ranger Ball. We're sooo looking forward to time together to reconnect and enjoy each other again. I know we'll be up at the crack of dawn ready to get back home to our little man! Thanks, Gammy, for saving us!

Friday Night

Friday night the Davis Family invited us over for pizza... Andy had story time for the boys as well. We were cracking up that this is probably the life of a polygamist on any given night. The man sitting on the couch surrounded by his wives and kids, having story time. I think that was the first time I've ever seen Andy blush!

e-Mealz

Ok... I'm totally copying this from a friends blog, but once I read and joined I had to spread the word! My resolution this year was to better myself in the kitchen. Jason is the cook in our family so during deployments I resort to cereal, sandwiches, EATING OUT, microwave meals, and the occasional baked chicken, spaghetti, soup, etc. I've been planning and researching for a couple weeks now about making my own baby food at home for Gavin. I think I've about got that figured out and can't wait to start in another month or two. So, that took care of bettering myself in the kitchen for one family member! I still struggled with what to do for meals when Jason gets back and what to do for myself while he's gone for healthier at home meals. Then I came across a friends blog post about e-mealz.com - What an awesome program! Theres no way I can properly explain it, so you'll have to click the box below to go to the site and get the full details. One reason I'm hooked is that you can choose a "Points Meal Plan" for either 2 people, or for a family of 4-6 people. All your dinners are planned for you: a main dish and sides for each night of the week. The Weight Watcher points values are already figured out for everything. The meal plan is broken down into the recipe and the grocery shopping list for Walmart, or whatever store you choose. They also have non point meal plans, for people that aren't on Weight Watchers. The program is $15 for 3 months, but if you use the code DAVE (for Dave Ramsey) it's only $12.50 for the first 3 months. I signed up tonight, and instantly have access to 2 weeks of meal plans. Each week a new meal plan menu/recipe/grocery list will pop up. HOW AWESOME. So, now I know how to better myself in the kitchen for Jason and I. Can't wait for my first trip to Walmart... it'll be awesome to have my list for the week already written for me!

Let's Play Ball!

Gavin really impressed me tonight with his reaching skills. He sure wanted to get his ball and he knew exactly how to get it. What a smart little boy...

He's such a ham! You can tell by the background that play time in Gavin's room has become a big event everyday... toys are everywhere!

Almost forgot - Gavin sat in his first public high chair tonight! We went to Golden Corral with a few friends and their kids... After spending about 5 minutes wiping down the chair to get all the germs off, lining it with a blanket, and adding his jacket as a cushion he finally got to sit in it. He did great, until he decided he was hungry and needed a meal as well! One friend of mine gave me a new Hooter Hider and we tested that one out at dinner. LOVE IT! It's a really cute blue/brown pattern, much more "boy appropriate" then the pink and orange flowered hooter hider I already have! Thanks Melissa!!

Play time

I'm a day late on posting, but here are some pics from our morning play time yesterday... Gavin was really using his arms to push himself up high, but of course I couldn't get a picture of him in time pushed all the way up! We also practiced sitting. The boppy is great for this!

Baby Food Advice

In the next few months Gavin will start on foods, so I've really been thinking about it lately. I think I've decided I'm going to make his foods at home, instead of buying jars and jars of baby food. Does anyone know of a good baby food maker/processor? Also, do you know of any good baby food cook books out there? I've also played with the idea of feeding him organic foods. Anyone have any thoughts, ideas, suggestions?? I've heard of using a ice cube tray as a way to store the homemade food in the freezer, and then you just pop out one "cube" of food and let it thaw before a meal. I thought that was clever! Any other ideas?? Thanks for your help!

Four Months

I can't get over how quickly the months are passing. At this rate, we'll be having his first birthday party before we know it! As a whole, this month has probably been my favorite so far. He's reached so many fun milestones. He has great head and neck control, babbles all the time, laughs, gets excited, can entertain himself, reaches and holds his toys, and puts EVERYTHING in his mouth. He is so much fun. To celebrate turning 4 months we stopped at the park on our daily walk. (We borrowed another neighborhoods playground, as they have swings for kids Gavin's size!) Gavin loved it, he held on and didn't take his eyes of LT, who was laying next to the swing. We will for sure be going back when daddy gets home. I think Gavin will love going down the slide on daddy's lap. Gavin had one other first today - brushing his gums! The tooth and gum cleaner we found could be started at 4 months, so we were excited to add this into our nightly routine. He loved the fruity flavor of the paste. Another thing we could start, but aren't going to quite yet, is rice cereal. Gavin is showing interest in foods when I eat, but its obvious he isn't hurting for calories or anything, so we're going to wait a little longer to start. We may start around 5 months when daddy is home to do the first feeding. Well, here are a few pictures and videos of Gavin's special day:

Prayer Request

In one hour the funeral for SSG Anthony Davis will take place. (See earlier post). I ask that you pray for the family as they go through this difficult time and also for the many ranger wives and families that have traveled to be there as well.

Westboro Baptist Church has a press release on their web-site to call their members to protest at Ranger Davis' funeral. In response to this, the Patriot Guard Riders (motorcyclists) will stand between the protesters and the family and stand strong and silent.

It makes me sick to know that this group will use the funeral of an American hero as a backdrop for their protest. This man died protecting their freedoms, and this is how they thank him. I pray that they found something more worthy of their time this morning. Thank you to the Patriot Guard Riders for your support. And thanks to my readers for your prayers.

Lake Mayer

Today I took Gavin to one of the parks in Savannah to walk and see the ducks. We had such a good time that we're going to find more recreation parks to explore! Walking is one form of exercise I can easily get when I'm home alone with Gavin, but I get so tired of just walking around our neighborhood everyday. It was a little chilly out this afternoon, but we bundled up and enjoyed the change of scenery. Next time I think we should probably bring bread along with us. The ducks had no fear in walking right up to us. We may try to hit up Forsyth Park and Daffin Park sometime this month. Anyone in the Savannah area want to join??

When we got home I showed Gavin a couple videos on YouTube of babies laughing, and he thought it was so funny!

Lunch date

Today Gavin and I met Erica, Andy, Tyson, and Erica's mom for lunch downtown. The weather was chilly and rainy, so we didn't last outside for long. Tyson napped the whole lunch, while Gavin remained awake and flirted with Erica's mom! Gavin and I can't wait for the next couple months when Tyson will have more and more awake times and we can actually hang out with him and see that personality shine! Gav and Ty will be buddies for sure. After lunch we ran a couple errands and then stopped to visit Melissa, Mackenzie, and Colton for a bit.

During this deployment, I'm so thankful to have these friends. I cherish my time with them. I'm so blessed to have so many friends here in Savannah that have small children as well. We are all going through many of the same things with experiencing raising children with a husband half way across the world. We can really relate and lean on one another in these times and I'm so thankful for that. It will be so hard for me when the time comes for Jason, Gavin, and I to leave Savannah. I'm glad its not anytime too soon!

Turn that Frown Upside Down

Gavin threw a tantrum last night and I knew intervention was needed ASAP - so we had tickle time. He LOVED it. He's been laughing here and there for a couple weeks, but yesterday was the first time I could get him to do it over and over. He got to where he would anticipate it and start laughing so hard. I had to grab the camera and attempt to film it the best I could. Please excuse the off centered film job, but I had to quickly capture the moment.

Aren't his new pj's just too cute?!? Old Navy had a lot of their short sleeved pajamas on sale this week and we picked up a couple pair.

Gavin continues to sleep on a great schedule. He goes to bed between 10 and 10:30pm and gets up at 8:30 in the morning. I wake him up at this time everyday to keep him on schedule. Now he usually wakes up on his own right at 8:30! His first nap usually lasts from 11-12:30. He takes another hour long nap sometime in the afternoon (I usually run errands at that time so his nap time frame depends on what we're doing) and then he gets in a little 30 minute power nap in the evening. I feel so blessed to have a great sleeper. It makes me a better mother during the day when I've had 8 hours sleep at night!

Gavin has shown signs that teething has begun. He has two tiny white spots poking through on his bottom gums. I can't believe he's starting so early! I picked him up a stage 1 toothbrush and toothpaste and will start that when he turns 4 months on Thursday. Working in a pediatric dentist office for 5 years (in high school/college) taught me the importance of starting oral hygiene at an early age!

His 4 month doctors appointment is scheduled for the 22nd. I can't wait to get in and check his weight, height, and to see what the pediatrician has to say about everything. He will be getting his first big set of immunizations at this appointment (he had RSV at 2 months, and then had Hand, Foot, and Mouth so I decided to wait to start his vaccines.) I think he will do much better with them now that he's healthy!!

Gavin is trying so hard to roll from his back to his stomach. I know it won't be long! Well, I better get off of here. I could talk about my munchkin all day!

Ranger Killed in Iraq

I ask that you pray for the family and friends of SSG Anthony Davis... He served in our battalion and was killed this week. Thanks for your prayers.


An Army Ranger serving with 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment died Jan. 6 while conducting combat operations in Northern Iraq.

Staff Sgt. Anthony D. Davis, 29, was killed during a direct-fire engagement by a heavily armed enemy combatant. The enemy combatant was subsequently killed when he engaged the assault force. No other Rangers were injured.

“Staff Sergeant Davis leaves behind a legacy in the countless Rangers who he has trained, influenced and befriended through numerous years of service and multiple deployments with this Regiment,” said Col. Richard D. Clarke, 75th Ranger Regiment commander.

“Today our Nation mourns the loss of Staff Sergeant Anthony Davis,” said Lt. Col. Brian Mennes, 1st Bn., 75th Ranger Regiment commander. “A man who selflessly chose to serve his country during this tumultuous period in our nation’s history in a manner that is both honorable and respected. Staff Sergeant Davis died defending his nation fighting alongside his buddies, leaving behind hundreds of Rangers who called him their friend.”

Davis was in his sixth deployment in support of the War on Terror with three previous deployments to Iraq and two to Afghanistan.

A native of Daytona Beach, Fla., Davis initially entered the Army on Oct. 10, 2000 was assigned to Company C, 1st Bn., at Hunter Army Airfield, Ga., July 3, 2001. He served as a fire team leader with Co. C and a team leader with Headquarters and Headquarters Company.

He earned his Ranger Tab when he completed U.S. Army Ranger Course at Fort Benning, 2002.

Davis is survived by his mother, Ellen Davis of Fayetteville, N.C.; his stepfather, Nelson Buckwald of Florida; sister, Staff Sgt. Nakischa Davis, Fayetteville, N.C.; and, niece, Ariana also of Fayetteville.

Last day with Pop and Gammy

We started out the day with a trip to Hunter AAF to see the Ranger Memorial and to the Dodge dealership to pick up Jason's truck. I dropped it off Friday for the big 100K service. I was devastated when they called in the afternoon with a long list of work the truck needed, but am thankful they had all the parts and were able to get it completed by Saturday afternoon. A word of advice to all: Get your regular maintenance done on your vehicles! Don't wait until the vehicle has 100K miles on it!! It's not fun to play catch up with maintenance... LESSON LEARNED!

Next, we had lunch at a tasty mexican restaurant and then headed home. Gavin napped and Jeff and Starla helped me finish sooooo many tasks around the house that were in desperate need of getting done. Thanks so much for coming and letting me put you to work! The yard looks a million times better, all light bulbs are working, and Jason will be so thankful that his bike is in proper working order. I'm also so thankful for Lindsey's fiance, Josh, who spent time working on our desktop loading antivirus software and Microsoft Office. He even helped me fix our speakers! Jason won't know what to think when he gets home... Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for helping me get things marked off my to-do list.
By early evening we were all exhausted... we turned on the game and relaxed. Gavin put on a Titan's jersey for a picture for Nana! Too tired to cook or go out, Jeff ran out and picked us up some McDonald's drive thru - it was soooo tasty!

To end the night, Gavin got a bath in the kitchen sink. He was pampered by his Gammy, who put a fresh towel in the dryer to get it super warm for him. Hope he doesn't think that is going to be the norm from now on!!! haha Thanks Gammy for spoiling Gavin.

Jeff and Starla headed out this morning. We already miss them so much! Thanks for spending the last 4 days in Savannah with us... it only could have been better if Jason was here to join us.

River Street

Today we headed downtown for lunch and window shopping... We stopped in Kevin Barry's to look at the Ranger Memorabilia first and then headed to The Shrimp Factory to eat. On the walk back to the car we stopped and watched several ships go by. We were so glad Great Aunt Jackie could join us for the day!
